ABOUT THIS PIECE
I first met him in 1974 in Zaire, Africa, at a press conference for Rumble in the Jungle between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. Ali was going on about how the white man took the black man's true names away, took his true dress away, and then he pointed at me and said, The white man will send a white woman photographer before the would send a black photographer. James Brown jumped up and said, Wait a minute, the white man buys my records! I got to know him because he was there to play a music festival. We left Zaire on the same plane, which was delayed five hours because Mr. Brown was fighting with the airport personnel about his equipment going with us. The said it made the plane too heavy. He didn't care. He said his equipment was going with him. I don't know how he won, but he did. - Lynn Goldsmith
