ABOUT THIS PIECE

By March 1963, when this expressive portrait was taken, Glenn Gould's concert activity had decreased markedly as the maestro spent more time speaking and writing about music than performing it in public. The same year this photo was taken, Gould was awarded an honorary PhD from the University of Toronto. By 1964, he would retire from public performing entirely, devoting his creative energies to writing, lecturing, broadcasting, composing, conducting and experimenting with the promise of newly developing recording technologies. Don Hunstein's fascinating, seemingly candid, glimpse of Glenn Gould illuminates the virtuosity of his creative intellect as he works out a precise point of music theory to an unseen audience off-camera.
