Charles Mingus, New York City, 1959
ABOUT THIS PIECE
American jazz composer-bassist Charles Mingus debuted at his new label, Columbia Records, with a pair of back-to-back masterpieces – “Mingus Ah Um” and “Mingus Dynasty” - both recorded and released in 1959. “Mingus Dynasty” would be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame forty years later with “Mingus Ah Um” becoming one of fifty recordings to be added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2003. This shot of Mingus in the studio in May of that watershed year, captures the essence of an artist whose Self-Portrait in Three Colors (originally written for John Cassavetes' first film Shadows) could be photographed in black, white and grey by Don Hunstein.
