Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers with Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Bill Pierce, Donald Brown, 1981
ABOUT THIS PIECE
Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, 1981.
Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, who had joined Blakey for a European tour in 1980. Branford Marsalis, on alto on the far right who had just graduated from Berklee in late ‘81. Left of Wynton is Bill Pierce on tenor, and on piano Donald Brown. Peter Occhiygrosso, former music editor for the Soho News gave this photo some historical context for us:This is a historic photograph because the Marsalis brothers quit this band in early ‘82 to start their own band, so they weren’t with Blakey for long. (Ironically, the early Messengers were a hothouse for great musicians on the way up, like Lee Morgan, Kenny Durham, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Chick Correa, and on and on.
